Critical sections of gauge functionals: a symmetry approach

ABSTRACT.  We extend the classical theorem of L. Michel on the symmetry
breaking patterns in theories described by minimization of a symmetric
potential to the case of theories described by minimization of a
gauge-symmetric functional.
