We further the connection between information theory and statistical mechanics by developing a thermodynamic approach to quantum error correction. Our method of protecting a code space of quantum bits from interference involves realizing it as a thermo-equilibrium subspace in the Hilbert space of a quantum statistical model. We apply the ideas of Claude Shannon to quantum error correction.
